Traditional massage involves disrobing and laying on a massage table that is draped with sheets or linens that cover the table and your body. These linens do not only create a barrier between you and the table but should offer warmth, comfort, and body coverage during your massage. You may not be able to control the type of linens used at a massage spa, but for mobile massage (where a massage therapist comes to your home), you may be able to use your own linens. For added comfort, you may wish to purchase a massage table topper or pad. Here’s what to look for when shopping!

Materials

If you have sensitive skin, nothing is worse than dealing with scratchy massage table linens. Different materials offer different benefits.

Bamboo sheets are some of the softest sheets available. Bamboo sheets are hypoallergenic and are incredibly durable. A single set of bamboo sheets can easily survive through over a thousand washes. This is especially useful in the massage industry, where sheets are washed after every use.

Cotton sheets are more affordable than bamboo and require lower maintenance, but the lifespan is significantly shorter. Thread count will affect the texture of the sheets, and a higher thread count will cost more money. When shopping for cotton sheets, opt for 1000-thread count or higher. Egyptian cotton is particularly soft and comfortable.

Poly-Cotton

Poly-cotton blended sheets are highly durable and low-maintenance. Poly-cotton does tend to trap heat at a higher rate than cotton or bamboo. Poly-cotton blends should not be used by those with polyester sensitivities.

Silk, satin, flannel, microfiber, and other materials can pose issues when it comes to massage. Silk and satin are too slick and may slip during your massage, exposing you and creating discomfort. Satin and silk sheets also stain easily. Flannel and microfiber both stain easily and will retain heat, potentially making for a sweaty, uncomfortable massage.

Sizing

A standard massage table can use twin-sized fitted sheets. Your flat sheet or top sheet should be full-sized to ensure adequate draping. If you plan to use a massage table pad, you may want to purchase a deep-pocket fitted sheet to ensure a good fit.

Pads

Pads can boost the comfort of your massage. Massage table pads come in many materials, such as memory foam, waterproof, and heated. Heated pads can be placed underneath sheets, as well as underneath certain pad toppers. Check manufacture recommendations and safety precautions before combining a heated massage table pad with other pads.

Toppers

Toppers can be made of fleece, egg-crate foam, and other materials. Fleece toppers tend to have straps that secure the topper to the massage table or may come equipped with a slip-cover with edges similar to a fitted sheet. Toppers that secure to the massage table are best, as they prevent slippage.
