Paraffin wax treatments are an add-on service offered by many massage therapists and spas. These treatments can nourish the skin, leaving your hands and feet feeling soft and supple. These treatments provide not only cosmetic benefits but physical health benefits as well.

What To Expect

Paraffin wax treatments involve coating the hands or feet in a warmed wax that has a low-heating temperature. The treated body parts are covered with plastic booties or bags and wrapped in a heated towel. Once the paraffin wax has cooled, it is carefully removed from the skin and disposed of. Paraffin wax does not easily stick to the skin due to its emollient properties, so it’s not like the wax used for hair removal. It is pretty soft and smooth to the touch. When appropriately heated, the wax should be warm but not scalding. If you feel excessive heat or burning, notify the practitioner immediately.

Benefits

Paraffin wax is a deeply moisturizing treatment that leaves skin soft, supple, and hydrated. Paraffin wax treatments can ease muscle and joint pain associated with arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other joint and mobility disorders. Paraffin wax can alleviate stiffness and swelling in joints and muscle tissue. The treatment also supports blood circulation and can decrease inflammation. Paraffin wax treatments can also offer gentle exfoliating benefits, encouraging healthy cell turnover.

Contraindications

Paraffin wax treatments are not recommended for clients with severe or uncontrolled diabetes, neuralgia, neuropathy, open sores, or rashes. Nerve conditions can diminish your ability to accurately register heat, which may lead to severe burns. Paraffin is a petroleum-based product, so if you have petroleum sensitivity, this treatment is best avoided.

Frequency

Paraffin wax treatments can be safely performed at every visit, should you choose. Paraffin wax treatments are generally considered safe for most people. Over time you will be able to gauge your tolerance to these treatments and determine how frequently you can receive them.

Aftercare

You may resume regular activity after receiving a paraffin wax treatment. To reap the long-term benefits of paraffin wax treatments, be sure to moisturize often throughout the day and after washing your hands. If you notice a reaction to the treated area, such as cracked or dry skin, hives, or rash, you may have a sensitivity or allergy and should discontinue these treatments immediately. Wash the affected area thoroughly with warm water and soap. Moisturize with a lotion formulated for cracked skin. If you notice your cracked skin beginning to bleed or seep fluid, contact your primary care physician immediately to assess your skin’s condition. Contact dermatitis and other skin conditions may require treatment such as medicated creams. Notify your massage therapist or practitioner so they can note your reaction in your client file and avoid these products in future appointments.
